Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men
Men in the 20s are usually at their sexual peak on up into their early 30s. Some men even experience a considerably high sex drive until they reach age 40.
However, in some cases a man may experience erectile dysfunction (ED) and other problems at a much younger age. Oftentimes, this is caused by a pre-existing health condition. Otherwise, it could be a result of psychological problems.
Cause of ED
It usually is caused by the blockage of flow of blood into the penis. This is usually the result of a failed nerve signal or other issue that causes the blood vessels in the penis to expand. When this happens, an erection may not last very long, if at all.
Sometimes this condition is a result of a preexisting health condition, or it could because of a medication that a man takes. It may also be from some psychological abuse trauma that happened to a man as a child.
It also could be the result of other health conditions such as nerve damage, cardiovascular disease, cancer, spinal cord injuries, or multiple sclerosis. It also may be a cause of irregular hormone production or obesity.
Some of the diseases that can calls ED in men under 40 include diabetes or vascular diseases. However, one MD has mentioned that the main cause of ED is actually “between the ears.”
In other words, some men are actually at a normal sexual functioning level for their age. The main problem for them is that they are not 16 or 18 anymore.
Psychological Factors
Various factors that younger men deal with, as one doctor put it, are in the mind. These psychological factors include such things as performance anxiety, sadness or depression.
Maybe a man was teased a lot as a child or young adult and thus feels unattractive. Other reasons younger men may experience sexual problems is that they are under a great deal of financial stress.
Other Causes
Sometimes men who experience premature cases of erectile dysfunction are smokers. In fact, men who do smoke are 1.5 times more likely to have sexual performance troubles than men who do not.
Sometimes excessive alcohol use at a young age can cause impotence. Contrary to popular belief, alcohol-although it may “loosen a man up” may not always help him “get it up.”
Treatment Tips
Although medications or other medical treatments may be effective in some cases where ED is addressed, it may not work in all cases. One medical professional for sure does not recommend medication for erectile problems.
